Design

The image of the patch as released on November 13, 2012, with 'Wakata' in Western script.

The Expedition-38 artwork was first shared by astronaut Rick Mastracchio on Twitter on November 13, 2012. The patch was designed by Blake Dumesnil. It had one minor difference to the final version: the name of Koichi Wakata was still written in Western script.

First patches were produced in January 2013, but had a small mistake in them: the name of Tyurin was embroidered with a seperate I and O. The problem was corrected before mass production, which began in early February 2013.

Spot the patch

The three Expedition-36 patches that were on the Sokols of Fyodor Yurchikhin, Luca Parmitano and Karen Nyberg during the Soyuz TMA-09M launch, are floating inside the ISS cupola. The three crewmembers changed these for Expedition-37 patches for the landing leg of their journey.
