Designing process

Top: Marciel Santos Kayle's design; Marciel Santos Kayle meets the crew; the initial proposal by Luc van den Abeelen. Bottom: another early design and two early embroidered prototypes.

Luc first proposed a design at the end of March 2010. It was circular in shape, had a red border and already included an Earth with Yuri Gagarin's face visible in the cloud pattern, as well as a '50'. At the request of Roscosmos PR, an alternative design was made in the shape of a Vostok. Design was finalized in May 2010.

Four different prototypes were produced in August and September 2010, ahead of formal approval, to determine final colors. Patch was approved by Roscosmos on November 9, 2010 and finalized that same month. Published by Roscosmos on their website on December 27, 2010. For the first time, pins were also produced.

Back up patch / Souvenir patch

In addition to a back up patch, a souvenir patch was also produced for Roscosmos.
